A collection of essays coming out of a (1991) conference on the theme of biblical chosenness, western nationalism, and, to some extent, imperialism. An interesting if fairly bland volume. The highlight is definitely Albert Raboteaus chapter on African-American ideas of election, centered around uses of the biblical Exodus, Psalm 68:32 (Princes shall come out of Egypt and Ethiopia shall soon stretch forth her hands unto God, and Second Isaiahs suffering servant.

The essay fruitfully explores the use and interpretations of these texts in diverse strands African-American theology and politics. Also well worth reading is Paul Mendes-Flohrs chapter on modern Zionism, in which he makes the provocative claims that the notion of a chosen people was absent from pre-modern Judaism.
